Before Setting Up a Credit Cards Merchant Account...
It doesn’t matter if you are opening up a credit cards merchant account for the first time or simply changing the payment processor you currently have, there are three things you will always need to keep in mind before setting up a credit cards merchant account. Always keep in mind when setting up a merchant account that you will be getting more profit and more customers than you have ever had before, so learning about the account beforehand can help you reserve time to deal with your new customer base. Also keep in mind that some credit cards merchant account companies are simply out to make money. They will have higher fees, charge for ridiculous things, such as filling out an application, and offer little to no customer service. Stay away from these companies.
Before setting up a credit cards merchant account, it is important to know exactly what fees will be charged and what you will be expected to pay. There is really no “standard” when it comes to credit card fees. Different companies will charge different fees and they may even try to confuse you by calling these fees different things or offering a very cheap fee in one category then raising fees in other categories. You will be paying a lot of different fees in most cases, but you will certainly be paying a discount fee, transaction fee and some kind of account fee at a minimum. You should also watch out for termination fees, especially if you have signed a contract that is long term. If you are comparing prices, as you should be, you will notice all of these fees pop up.
The second thing you should look at before setting up a credit cards merchant account is the customer service offered by particular companies. It should be vital to have a high level of customer service. If you are a business owner, you know exactly how customer service can make or break a business relationship. The credit cards merchant account you choose should have customer service available 24/7 by phone and if you want it, e-mail and online chat. In addition to having access to regular customer service, you should make sure the tech team is available at all times as well.
The third thing you should look for in a merchant account is their flexibility and the ability of them to focus on you and the type of company you are running. For instance, if you are in the business of selling cell phone accessories, you want to make sure the merchant account you are in business with has some experience with businesses, like your own, who sell cell phone accessories. At minimum, you want a company who at least as experience with electronics. A merchant account company that is focused on businesses that sell car parts probably will not be as well equipped to handle specific problems that can arise based on the items you sell. Choosing a merchant account is not always an easy choice, but doing your research can make it a lot easier.
