How to Evaluate Merchants Credit Card Accepting Companies

When you have decided to get a merchant account in order to accept credit cards, you may be overwhelmed by all of the possibility. It is true that there are many companies that offer merchants credit card accepting accounts, also known as merchants accounts.  Knowing how to evaluate the different merchants credit card companies out there will give you a great advantage when it comes to going through the process of securing a merchant account.

Most companies that offer merchants credit card accepting abilities will be third party, independent companies. Though banks are known to occasionally give merchant accounts to small businesses, in most cases, they will not give a merchants credit card account to a small business and only cater to large corporations. Unless you have an excellent relationship with a local bank, it is best to go with a third party.

One of the major things you will want to consider when evaluating a company to provide a merchant account for you is the rates and fees associated with the account. All merchant accounts are going to have fees associated with them, but there may be substantial differences between them. Each company will have different criteria that will affect the fees they give you. For example, in most cases, the less risk they need to take on, the cheaper your rates will be. This means that a business that performs face to face card transactions, like those done in a retail store, could very well have cheaper rates than a business who does transactions via the internet. They may also take into account how long you have been in business, the type of business you have and even your own personal credit rating.

It is important for you to know that these fees may be negotiable in some cases, but before you begin negotiating, remember to get all the information available. At this point, you will only be familiar with the base fees that each company has. There are other things to keep in mind when it comes to getting a merchants credit card account from a third party process too, such as the cost of hardware.

When you own a business that accepts credit cards, you will need to have some kind of hardware to accept the cards, unless, of course, you are solely based on the internet. There are several types of hardware available that will make accepting credit cards easier and in most cases, will be required. You will usually have an option of leasing or buying the equipment depending on the company you choose to work with. Though the equipment will likely cost several hundred or even thousand dollars, it is always a better choice to buy it, instead of lease it. In a lease, you will simply be throwing money away at some point.

Finally, when evaluating merchants credit card accepting services, make sure you read all the fine print in the contract you will sign and read reviews on the company. If anything feels wrong, go with your gut and choose another service.
