How to Get Credit Card Processing for Your Internet Business

Having an internet business can be very lucrative as many people engage in online shopping. You can save a lot of money when you have an online business as you will not have to pay any start up costs, rent, or overhead like you would if you had a retail location. However, to be successful with an internet business, it is almost necessary to accept credit cards which have their own costs associated with it. The good thing is that credit card processing for an internet business is cheaper than for a retail location.

There are usually two ways to go through credit card processing when you have an online store. The first is with a merchant account, like many retail stores have. The other is by using a third party processor, such as PayPal, for all of your payments. When you have a merchant account for your internet credit card processing you can expect to pay a smaller amount for the account and service than retail locations do, of course, but you also may have a difficult time securing this account. Banks are just not keen on giving small businesses, especially an internet start-up, a merchant account. Your other choice is to go with a third party processor.

When you choose a third party processor for your internet credit card processing you may be paying a bit more in fees than you would with a bank’s merchant account, but you will also be doing a lot less work and can basically sit there and watch the money come in. Most everyone can sign up with a third party processor and accept payment in that way no matter what you sell online, but you should remember that you will likely be paying extra fees for this luxury. Unfortunately you may not have a choice as this may be the only option for many internet shop owners.

If you think the fees are too high to do credit card processing online you may do well to remember that statistics show that sites that accept credit cards have sales up to 400% more than those who do not accept credit cards. Four hundred percent is certainly nothing to laugh at. It is probably also important to mention that overall companies who accept credit cards have profits up to 100% or more over those who do not. This includes not only internet stores but also retail locations.

You can usually find credit card processing companies fairly easy, but they are not all created equally. You should always read reviews when choosing a company to process your credit card payments. Other business owners can give you a lot of great information when it comes to what companies treat their customers right and which ones may have less than stellar customer service or a lot of hidden fees. Before signing on the dotted line, or virtual line as the case may be, make sure you are always comfortable with your choice of processor and that you have totally read the information given to you so that you will not be surprised down the road when you begin seeing random charges.
