How to Get Started with Small Business Credit Card Processing

There are hundreds of credit card processing companies out there for small businesses, but finding the best one for you isn’t always easy. Though you may think a bank is the best place for small business credit card processing, most banks will not give accounts to small businesses because they are seen as a risk. Instead, you will need to go to one of the many third party processors out there. The only problem is there are so many you can easily get overwhelmed.

There is such a vast number of small business credit card processing companies out there and they all have different fee structures and account types as well. How can you possibly choose? Usually the easiest way to choose one of these companies is to go through a detailed compare and contrast of the goods and services, as well as the fees that each processor has. When you know what to expect from these companies, you will be able to better evaluate each company and find out if they are right for you.

One of the most important things you will need to consider when choosing a small business credit card processing company are the fees. There are many factors that will influence the rates and fees that you will pay to accept credit cards. Some of the ones you should look out for include something called the discount rate and something called the transaction fee. The discount rate is a small percentage, usually anywhere from 2% - 3% on average, of the final amount that your customer charged. For instance, if your customer put $200 on their credit card at your store, you would owe your payment processing company $4.00 - $6.00 based on a 2% - 3% discount rate.

In addition to the discount rate, you will need to pay a transaction fee. You should expect to pay anywhere from $0.20 - $0.30 per transaction as well, so you are actually going to be paying $4.20 - $6.30 if your customer spends $200 on their credit card in your store. If you can find small business credit card processing company that will offer those rates, you will probably be just fine to sign on with them.  However, you will need to watch for other hidden fees and charges that may creep up. The rates you pay will partially be based on your own personal credit score, the amount of time you have been in business and even the type of business you do among other things.

You may also need to buy equipment from the small business credit card processing company you choose. Sometimes this will lower the rates they charge, other times you may be better off buying the equipment somewhere else. Depending on the type of equipment you need, you can save a lot of money if you buy the equipment online.

Before you sign up for any small business credit card processing company, read the entire contract and make sure that you understand what you are actually paying for. It is important that you understand every aspect of your contract before using it.
