How to Purchase Credit Card Machines for your Expanding Business

As a small business owner you may be interested in upgrading your current credit card machines or purchasing new ones, especially if you are expanding. If you are moving upward and onward in your business whether it be moving to a new and larger location, opening a new store or even if you are overloaded with new credit card orders for an online business, getting new credit card machines or upgrading your existing machines can make this process easy and smooth with minimum impact on your current business.

There are a variety of card machines, also called terminals, available on the market. There are three main types of machines: traditional machines, wireless machines and virtual machines. Additionally, if you buy point of sale systems, credit terminals are included in the system. Traditional terminals work great for most businesses. These are the machines you are used to seeing where the card is swiped through a reader. They typically will have a small printer that produces the receipts for customers to sign.

Wireless credit card machines are the hand held machines that are easy to travel with and used often by businesses that are highly mobile including taxi drivers, home improvement companies and businesses who sell their products at flea markets, fairs or festivals. Virtual credit card systems are the newer systems. This is great for companies who are highly phone or internet based. There will be very little or no hardware and most of the transactions will be conducted online. The virtual systems are excellent for recurring charges and can be programmed to do these types of transactions automatically.

In addition to buying the machine, you will have to set up some kind of account with the credit card merchant company. Usually there is a monthly fee associated with this, but with the increased sales you can generate by offering to accept credit cards, it is usually worth these fees. In fact, most companies will find even when paying the credit card fees, that they are still bringing in a profit, even if they weren't before due to additional sales. This can be an excellent way to grow and expand your business if you are interested in that as well.

Seeking out recommended companies in order to purchase these card machines can be overwhelming, especially if you need full point of sale terminals and software. Seeking recommendations from other business owners or even your own bank may be a great place to start. You can find wireless machines online or in retail stores for $150 - $450 on average, but before buying online, make sure they are supported by a reputable company such as Verifone, Lipman or Hypercom. These are companies who have been around for many years and are trusted and safe. There are others out there, of course and seeking out reviews can help you judge which may be best for you.

If you are a merchant who does not currently have card machines or accept credit cards at all, learning more about what credit cards can do for your company is recommended. You will probably be pleasantly surprised!
