Opening up a Credit Card Account? Make Sure You Read the Fine Print
As we move to a cashless society, a majority of consumers find it necessary to have at least one credit card account. MasterCard and Visa are the dominant players in the credit card arena, but others exist, such as American Express or Discover. When consumers are looking at which credit card to apply for, there are several options for them to look at. Obviously, the interest rate of each card is of the ultimate importance, but there are a multitude of programs being offered that enhance the credit card whenever they use it.
When selecting a company, and applying for a credit card account, there are several factors to consider. Is the card "secured" or "unsecured?" If the consumer has good credit, they will typically be offered a credit card that is unsecured. Unsecured credit cards will have a higher limit an often a lower interest rate. Consumers with bad credit will usually be offered a credit card account that is secured. A secured account usually means that the consumer will first make a deposit into the account, and their credit limit will be tied to the balance on the account. Secured credit cards are a great alternative for the consumer who is looking to rebuild their credit. One drawback to this type of credit card account is the unusually high interest rates that are charged by the lending institutions. On the flip side, the bank must pay interest on the cash you are forced to keep in the account for this secured card. Either way, secured or unsecured, it is imperative that the consumer keeps their spending in check, and does not ring up unnecessary charges beyond what their budget can handle.
Something more to consider when applying for a credit card is the "rewards" programs that are offered. Most companies nowadays are offering significant rewards for the use of their credit card. Rewards can range from frequent flier miles to discounts on a new set of tires for the car. If you are a responsible consumer, one that pays off their balance every month, it would make sense to choose a credit card that will reward you for using their card. Most every airline and large corporation offers these types of credit card account to reward customer loyalty, and garner brand recognition. Some other companies even offer cash back on your spending. Depending on your spending habits, there is probably a company offering a credit card that will be of value to you.
In summary, when the consumer is choosing a credit card, several factors must be considered and weighed out. Is the credit card account being offered a secured line of credit, or unsecured? Depending on what your credit score looks like will go a long way towards determining what type of account you will qualify for. Always read over the fine print provided with the application to see what you are getting yourself into. Also consider the types of rewards being offered by the credit card companies. Depending on your spending habits, you may find it relatively easy to save up enough miles to take your dream vacation, an added benefit. Try not to apply for too many credit cards because this can easily over extend your budget and create problems in the future. Make sure your credit card spending is responsible and within your spending constraints. Because credit cards are so readily available, it is very easy to charge up a storm and hurt your credit score, which is exactly the opposite of their intended use.
