What Does Credit Card Program Mean?

When someone says credit card program they can be referring to a couple of different things.  The rewards options offered by some credit card providers can be referred to as a credit card program.  The information that a terminal needs to effectively process electronic payments can be a credit card program.  The payment schedule that a business negotiates with their merchant services provider can be referred to as a credit card program.  It is important to determine exactly what someone means by this term before entering into a discussion.

Many credit card account providers offer rewards to their account holders.  These rewards cards may charge the holder an annual fee for adding the rewards programs, and businesses are usually billed at a higher rate for processing transactions using these cards.  Because the credit issuer has higher costs associated with a rewards card, they charge more for merchants to process transactions on the cards.  Many account holders prefer to use rewards cards because the points they accumulate can save them a considerable amount of money over time.  Air fare is one of the most commonly redeemed rewards offering.   Being able to get free airfare is something that many enjoy about using their credit cards for purchases.  Credit card issuers make money on both the interest rolled over on the credit card and on the transaction fees for each purchase the card holder makes.  Credit card issuers offer rewards programs in an attempt to encourage people to make purchases using their cards, since this increases their profits.

Terminals need a credit card program provided by the merchant services company to properly process electronic payments.  The credit card terminal can quickly and easily capture the magnetic data without the specific credit card program, but they don’t transmit properly to ensure correct deposit.  The credit card terminal only captures the information and transmits it to the merchant services company.  When it is not programmed correctly it can fail at either part of the task.  If the credit card equipment fails to capture the electronic data stored on the credit card, the transaction will never process.  If the credit card machine is having difficulty with transmission, then there are some options that can help.  The merchant services company may be able to install programming remotely that will let them recover your transactions.

When the credit card program referred to is the merchant fee rate, it is important to negotiate the best possible rate for your business.  Because you will be paying a percentage of every transaction to a third party, you want to ensure that you pay the lowest possible percentage rate.  The basic rate is determined by the credit issuer, but the third party also adds their own fee on top to allow them to function properly.  They do need to make a reasonable amount for providing service, but you want to ensure that you get the lowest market rate available.  The merchant fee schedule is usually tiered, so you need to make certain that your most commonly used transaction types are billed at the lowest rate.
